Misconception about Yoga in today’s time
Hello all,
This topic is really important for me as a yoga
enthusiast and a passion for dance. I believe many people are lacking the core
advantages of yoga and its use in progressing in our life. Without wasting much
time let’s start to understand and I want everyone just read till the end
because I am sure u will be amazed to know the misconceptions against the
reality to yoga.
LET me first clear u all “Yoga” means ‘to unite’
it comes from Sanskrit word ‘yuj’
1- misconception – Yoga is Just physical asanas
I have heard and seen a lot of trainers and coach
focus asanas as a physical training rather a wholesome training consisting of
not just physical asana but meditative benefits attached to it. It’s a whole
science and yoga therefore can’t be limited to physical development. In order
to attend its complete benefit it is important to train under a yoga guru or
coach who teaches how a body and mind with the practice of yoga as a way of
life can manage as well as handle things consciously well. The learner should
be able to perform positively because u know the phrase ‘As the body so is your
mind’ but I say ‘your body is a part of your external appearance, but what is
internal is the real you’. So, make sure your training involves not just
physical stretch but the meditative benefits which will only be achieved by
learning from a guru who has knowledge related to the asana’s building
uniformity with self.
2 misconception
Yoga doesn’t provide weight loss benefits:-
If I tell
you that weight loss in today’s time have become a trending advertisements you
see everywhere. What does weight loss means?
If you have
eaten extra calories which is not burning into energy fuel and stored as a fat
cells in your body means we are gaining weight. In this whole line I spoke about
calories, sometimes people know healthy eating is so important to look fit and
healthy. We are aware that balance diet is important to avoid over eating and
unnecessary calories in your body. BUT, here I must clear you your body is a
well programmed machine and it can perform thousand times better than u even
think of it. If u have felt u have consumed more calories more than a week the
best idea is to balance in your next week because your body already has fat
stored for energy. This I am talking for a person who is slightly over weighted.
Now, let’s
understand we don’t know all of these and we have gone obese or have gained too
much weight. Not an issue at all, Yoga in both the cases will help u so very
much. Your exercise should be a mix of everything like dance, gym, yoga etc. If
an overweight person starts following diet and goes daily to the gym he/she
will definitely get the expected results with continuous practice &
discipline. Yoga here can be a boon if someone doesn’t know I will clear you,
you just need to meditate daily for 40 mins (it can be morning – 20 mins, evening
20 mins) this will boost your self confidence and make your day as powerful as
your discipline. This 40 mins is just you with yourself. You will notice in a
month you will get your energy uplifted, your mind calmness, and a sense of
achievement. With that, doing yoga stretches everyday can make your core so
strong and increase flexibility of your body well. It’s important to be flexible
to avoid rigidity in your life.
3-misconception Yoga can be done by only a certain age groups:-
Yoga is open for all age groups and children can also start yoga after 5 years. There are simple asana and pranayama which children can do. Thus, now u can understand a child won’t do gym at the age of 5yrs but can definitely do yoga. HOW?
I will
brief u certain asana/kriya a child must do so that as he/she grow, their body is well
stretched and flexible with higher concentration as well as confidence. Trust me, if your child performs yoga with you from an early age then it will make the
child more conscious and active. Also, it develops different bhavas (attitude)
to experience the odds of life with greater will power. It is important for
children (above 12 yrs) to stretch and practice yoga to relax mind and preserve the vital
energy of the body.
For elderly
population, yoga is a must as it involves asana and pranayama which is so much
important to remove toxins, strengthen your core, relax your mind, increase
oxygen capacity and loosen the tension in your body. It saves Prana energy of
the body & mind through complete relaxation and breathing.
YOU can write in the comment and share more misconception you hear on your journey of YOGA.
My workstation
MANA which is a sanskrit word means Mind. Our mind is the chief of all our Indriya's which are associated by 5 BHUTAS. Also called as Panch mahabhuta. In Indian philosophy the whole world as well as our body is made of this 5 bhutas. Every cosmic creation is made up of this 5 basic elements that are Prithvi ( earth), Jal (water), Agni(fire), Vayu(Air), Aakash(Aether). In Ayurveda, the human body is considered to be made of these 5 elements.
Lets understand how our workstation commands and how our Gunas rule our emotions.
Tanmatra is a noun which means – rudimentary or subtle element, merely that, mere essence, potential or only a trifle. There are five sense perceptions – hearing, touch, sight, taste and smell, and there are the five tanmatras corresponding to the five sense perceptions and five sense-organs. The tanmatras combine and re-combine in different ways to produce the gross elements – earth, water, fire, air and ether, which make up the gross universe perceived by the senses. The senses play their part by coming into contact with the objects, and carry impressions of them to the manas which receives and arranges them into a precept.
According to the Vedic theory of creation, the tanmatras are the basis of all corporeal existences because from them evolve the Bhutas, the building blocks of the perceptible universe.
This is best to describe how our 5 senses take control of our Panch mahabhutas and give us the different Gunas to evolve like Satava, Rajas and Tamas. Before we come to gunas, let me give the whole picture of indriyas that creates a whole chitta and manifestations in our mind.
This is the easiest way to display how Manas and other 15 indriyas and 5 subtle elements and 5 gross elements produce different dualities of life like pain &pleasure, love &hate, dharma & adharma, jnana & ajnana, vairagya & avairagya, etc.
Such emotions derive clearly from Mahat that is buddhi which percolates this 3 gunas depending which is more than the other guna with reference to our sense and manas.
Satva is the quality of balance, harmony, goodness, purity, universalizing, holistic, constructive, creative, building, positive attitude, luminous, serenity, being-ness, peaceful, virtuous.
Rajas is the quality of passion, activity, neither good nor bad and sometimes either, self-centeredness, egoistic, individualizing, driven, moving, dynamic.
Tamas is the quality of imbalance, disorder, chaos, anxiety, impure, destructive, delusion, negative, dull or inactive, apathy, inertia or lethargy, violent, vicious, ignorant.
